When a plus-size patient needs to come downstairs from a back bedroom, when a district nurse needs a mattress changed under someone who can't be turned the usual way, when a new profiling bed has arrived and the person in the old one can't transfer standing — these are the jobs most providers don't plan for until they have to.

We provide a hands-on team for complex, single-event moving and handling tasks in homes, care settings and acute environments. 

Typical jobs include:

• Bed-to-bed lateral transfers when a new or replacement bed is installed
• Getting a person out of bed so a faulty bed frame can be repaired or swapped
• Mattress changes for district nurses where standard repositioning isn't possible
• Extracting a person from a back bedroom, upstairs room or bathroom for hospital admission, appointments or planned moves
• Moving a plus-size patient safely down stairs in a home that was never set up for it
• Emergency and non-emergency evacuation where the usual team or equipment isn't enough

Every job starts with a proper risk assessment — environment, person, task, equipment, team — and a plan the whole team (and the person being moved) understands before anyone lays a hand on anyone.

You get people led by a manual handling specialist who teaches this work for a living, who sits on the Sussex Back Exchange, and who has spent years developing body-shape-specific handling approaches for people living with obesity. We bring the same thinking to every job — whether it's a routine bed swap or a three-storey extraction from a terraced house.

Not every service can outsource this work, and not every job warrants an external team. If you want your own staff confident and competent in complex and bariatric handling, we train them — in your setting, on your equipment, with scenarios built around the environments they actually work in.

Training can cover:

• Complex environment risk assessment (TILEO applied to awkward homes)
• The five conversations — team communication before, during and after the task
• Body-shape-specific techniques for plus-size handling (Apple, Pear, Pannus, Gluteal Shelf and Abducted presentations)
• Safe use of evacuation equipment (EvacPRO+, EvacMat, ProMove slings, air-assisted transfer devices, flat-lift systems)
• Lateral transfer principles for bed swaps and mattress changes
• Stair evacuation with ladder-handle equipment
• Debrief and learning from routine tasks (Safety-II principles)

Courses are CPD Approved and can be run as half-day refreshers, full-day practical sessions, or multi-day train-the-trainer programmes.

WHY THIS SERVICE EXISTS

The honest answer: there aren't many teams in the UK who actually do this. You can hire a bariatric ambulance, you can buy equipment, you can book a training course — but the number of providers who will turn up to a house on a Tuesday morning, assess a complex extraction and safely carry it out with a trained team is small. We exist to fill that gap, and to teach other services how to build the capability in-house.
